House call!

April 17, 2012 by admin

A special message from our very special House Committee chair, Steve Vermillion:

Remember when the house looked like this? (Do you? Wow. You're kind of old. That was 1870.)

Beautiful day for the Annual Meeting. Outgoing club President Bob Price will be missed, but congratulations to Ed Ryan on his election as new club President. And great job to the Social Committee for another fun event … the raw oysters, champagne, and beer were reminiscent of PBC’s annual bull and oyster parties of long ago.

Since I kept my remarks short at the meeting, I wanted to elaborate further on what the House Committee does and hopefully, inspire a few of you to join the House Committee team! As you know, the current house is over 100 years old, but our third (the other two were closer to the Washington Harbor complex downstream). We have a unique and delicate gem in this boathouse. It is the only one of its kind in Washington, D.C.

To maintain this historic structure takes care and effort, and daily maintenance. The House Committee includes a team of plumbers, janitors, and general contractors … and you! You may not have noticed it, but the team recently installed some bright white PBC stars on the front and back of building, trimmed our dockside tree, inspected the fire control sprinkler system, performed monthly pest and rodent control, repaired the flag pole, lockers, lighting, roof, toilets, security system, dock and ramps, and doors, cleaning and repair of trophies, and removed accumulated junk throughout the house.

We also recently completed an upgrade of the gym, which includes new equipment, lighting, painting, and mirrors. The shed was cleared out and enclosed to allow year-around dual use as a weather-protected storage area for the ergs and an auxiliary workout area. New lighting was also added. Finally, we completed an upgrade of the fence in the aqueduct area. In the near future, we will be working to complete several additional projects, including most prominently, the dock upgrade.

Now THAT'S a busy dock (1925).

Basically, the House Committee’s two main goals are the following:

1 – To maintain a 100 year old historic structure used by hundreds of rowers; and
2 – To upgrade and improve the facility, and take it into the new century.

To meet those goals, we are working on a 25 year plan for House improvements. More than anything, we need volunteers, especially anyone with tools, special skills, donations or ideas. Let us know who you are and what you might be able to do for the club.

We also ask that you do your part every day to pick up trash, remove clutter, turn off the lights, show care with the toilets, close the doors when you leave, and treat the house like it was your own. Marques, our Maintenance Captain, is there twice a week, but he would very much appreciate it if we would clean up after ourselves as much as we can.

It takes a lot of volunteers and hard work to keep this place going, but together we will, as we have for 145 years. Please get in contact if you can help out.

Thanks, PBC.

This week! PBC at the NSR II and Non-Qualified Olympic Small Boat Trials

April 8, 2012 by admin

Heat sheets and results (available April 9, 2012, after Athletes Meeting)

Katie Stainken trains for trials this week in California.

The U.S. Non-Qualified Olympic Small Boat Trials take place this week in Chula Vista, California.  A select few of our Open Sculling Program athletes have been preparing for this event in Long Beach since January.  Training has been tough, but every day our athletes have shown dedication and progress towards meeting their goals.

Willy Cowles training to win the Men's Double Sculls.

Competing in trials will be the toughest challenge many of these athletes have faced.  But winning here means overcoming just one more hurdle to representing the United States at the Olympic Games in London.

This week’s winners of the men’s double sculls and women’s double sculls trials earn the chance to race at the Lucerne Qualification Regatta in May.

Open Sculling Program head coach Reilly Dampeer says, “I am confident in the hard work our athletes have put in, which of course started years ago.  We can look forward to aggressive racing this week.”

Go get ‘em, PBC!

Looking for the Bulletin Board previously linked from the subnav?  Well, it’s here!

Sorry … had to make room for the damage report form.  Boring, we know.

Online Equipment Damage Reporting Form

April 7, 2012 by admin

The Club Rowing Committee and the Racing Committee today introduce a new online Equipment Damage Reporting Form for you to use to report damage to club equipment.

The form is linked above.  Information provided by you will populate a spreadsheet that committee chairs and team managers will use to record a club asset’s damage history, track repairs and cost, and generally return equipment to its respective fleet with greater efficiency.

And since anyone can use the form – whether you’re reporting damage you may have caused or damage you may have simply noticed – the committees hope it will re-emphasize the responsibility we all share in the proper care and handling of club equipment.

If you have any questions regarding this form, please contact the Racing Committee Chair, Penelope Wrenn (Walz) at racing@potomacstar.com.

Thanks, PBC!
