Hello, Year of More Awesome

January 18, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

There is no arguing that our club had a Year of Awesome in 2012. Well, you could argue about it, but you’d sound a little crazy.

From success on the racecourse (the Henley crews, gold at Masters Nationals, a Champion Women’s double at the Charles, and of course, our Women’s Double that took us all the way to the 2012 Olympics) …

To a massive new dock installation at home, where folks from across the club – and their families, too! – came out in droves to be part of a club-historic effort …

To the diverse group of club members who showed up at the home of our dear friend and fellow club member Stephen D. Vermillion, III, to christen a hull in his name just before he passed …

To the countless little things fixed or improved upon all over the club by those who take no credit and want no glory …

Yep, PBC. We definitely had one of the most active years of club participation in recent history.

So, take a moment to reflect on 2012 and pat yourself on the back for an awesome year. Then take another moment to thank the club member who stood shoulder to shoulder with you as we moved ramps, floats and old sections of dock away to make way for the new.

Thank folks like our former club president Bob Price and our newly elected president Ed Ryan, who set in motion many of the people and mechanisms that helped us make last year the success that it was.

Join us in thanking everyone who was part of the solution, any solution, that made our club an even better place to be.  THANK YOU, NAMELESS FACELESS FELLOW CLUB MEMBER!

Finally, remember the passion that former House Committee chair Stephen D. Vermillion, III, had for PBC up until the very moment he passed. And when you do, grab hold of the positive change we saw in 2012 and with everything you have, pull it into 2013, the Year of More Awesome.

It doesn’t take a village.  It takes a club.  A club of champions … GO, PBC.

OS Stefanie Kozuszek reminds us what it’s really all about

Open Scullers launch for another morning of hard work on the water. (Photo by Igor Belakovskiy)

Tonight is the Rising Stars Dinner and Auction, an event to support the National Team and Olympic dreams of members of PBC’s Open Sculling Program.  Following the dinner, our Open Scullers will leave for California and the final leg of training for the regattas that will determine this year’s Olympic team.  Our shared hopes, dreams, and best wishes for success, go with them!

In this month’s look into the world of an Open Sculler, Stefanie Kozuszek reminds us that making the National Team is just the icing on the cake of being part of a hard working, close-knit team.

Happy 2012! I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season!

It’s a big year, an Olympic year, and the end of a four year cycle of hard work and effort by athletes from all over the world hoping to represent their nation in London. For the PBC Open Sculling Program, it means it’s time for us to kick it into overdrive. Following this weekend’s Rising Stars Dinner and Auction, a few of us will stay in DC and focus on building our fitness, targeting through to the next cycle. Others will head out to Long Beach, California, to prepare for the National Selection Regattas in Chula Vista in April. We all hope they will be greeted with flat water, warm weather, and a training environment that will lead them to a spot on the National Team.

It’s always interesting to see the reactions of people when you tell them that you are training to one day make the National Team or better yet, to make it to the Olympics. They usually hone in on the Olympic part and ask when the next Olympics are. The next time they see you they’ll ask something like, “So, make it to the Olympics, yet?”

Deep down, you know how much more work and how many more years you will have to put in to make that dream a reality. You’ll have to get up early, train twice a day, and throw in a little work on top of it all to help pay the bills. This and more run through your head when all the person waiting on the other side probably wants is the short answer. Still, you’re thinking that there is always more you can do, always something to improve on to give you that little extra edge … “No, not yet, but I’m working on it,” you say.

Sometimes it’s scary to share your ultimate goal with others. What if you never reach that goal? Will they think of you as a failure? Or will they respect that you had enough courage to chase those dreams? In the end I’ve realized that if you are doing what you what makes you happy, then who cares what someone else might thing.

The reality is that we won’t all make it to the Olympics or even to the National Team. But as long as we’ve tried our best and enjoyed the time that we’ve put in, each of us will be able to walk away with our heads held high knowing we were true to our dreams. The friendships built on this team alone are enough to make it all worth it, but we will have also bettered ourselves along the way.

But enough of that. It’s time to get fast!

The Open Sculling Report for May

May was a very busy month for members of the PBC open sculling team, with invitations to the National Selection Regatta (NSR) II and potential National Team boat camp invitations up for grabs.  The prior month, we had marked the beginning of our summer racing season, taking our singles up to Princeton for NSR I.  We experienced some mixed weather conditions at NSR I and some mixed results, but in May, with only three weeks separating the two NSR’s, we had to move quickly to find 2x combinations.

NSR I and II, which happen every April and May, are the primary races through which National Team selection occurs. For scullers, NSR I means racing the single. The winner of this regatta earns the opportunity to go to a World Cup in Europe as the U.S. Single Sculler, and, provided he or she finish in the top 4, retains this spot as the U.S. Single Sculler going into World Championships at the end of the summer.  The same is true of NSR II, except that the second regatta also holds the opportunity to earn invitations to boat camps.  While the winner of the 2x at NSR II can also go to a World Cup, anywhere from one to three or four “runners up” can be invited to the Quad camp, a National Team selection camp where invitees try to earn a spot in the 4x.

Willy Cowles of PBC and Mike Sivigny of GMS Rowing Center (Connecticut) at NSR II

After NSR II, nine Potomac athletes, along with three rowers from other clubs (USTC-OKC, Pocock Rowing Club, and GMS Rowing Center) ran both a men’s and a women’s doubles matrix that produced three men’s and three women’s doubles.  I paired up with Mike Sivigny, a rower from GMS in Connecticut, and split the weeks between NSRs between DC and Connecticut.  After three weeks of hard training, we arrived in Princeton ready to race.  After time trials, heats, and semis, my double ended up with a spot in the A Final.  We had our work cut out for us, with three current U.S. National Rowing team boats in the final, as well as strong entries from Penn AC and the 2009 U.S. National team double.

Mike and I knew that our strength lay in our endurance, and we were able, according to our race plan, to walk from 6th to 4th in the second thousand of the race.  Although we were disappointed to lose to the third place crew by only seven tenths of a second, we still felt we raced well.  Other Potomac crews raced well, too.  Kevin Baum and Taylor Frank pushed a strong last 500 to a 4th place finish in the B Final.  Joe Ledvina and Austin Nichols came in second in the C Final.  On the women’s side, Stephanie Kuzsocek and Meghan George placed 6th in the A final,  Morgan Wimberley and Katie Stainken third in the B Final, and Maria Bokulich and Malyka Iyanni third in the C Final.

Based on a combination of NSR I and NSR II performances, as well as erg scores, I was lucky enough to be invited to Quad camp at the ARCO U.S. Training Center in Chula Vista, California.   I have been here for almost two weeks so far, and have already pulled seven all-out 2ks (one on the erg).  It has been quite a learning experience.  The camp includes selection for the 4x, as well as for the 8+ and 4- on the sweep side, so as you can imagine, racing has been fierce.  The National team coaches use camps like these to seat race athletes against one another, trying to find the fastest combinations in all boats.  They will test whatever combinations come out first at the third World Cup in Lucerne, and later at World Championships in Bled, Slovenia.  This year, the pre-Olympic year, placement at Worlds is particularly important because a finish in the top 11 means qualification for the 2012 Olympics in London.  Racing promises to continue to be intense and I hope to be able to continue to work hard and try to earn a spot on this year’s team, with an eye towards London in 2012.

Happy Holidays from PBC’s Open Scullers! (Updated with pics!)

[Update: 12/30/10] Lucky us! Social Committee Co-Chair Camilla Durfee took a quick break from her busy holiday social schedule to send us the following photos taken by Louise Krumm at the 2010 PBC Holiday Party, on December 12. Just click play (forward arrow) to check them out. If you haven’t had a chance to read the original post from the Open Scullers, keep scrolling!

Thanks for sharing, Camilla and Louise! And Happy New Year, PBC!

[Original post: 12/19/10]

Katie Stainken (foreground) and Maria Bokulich of PBC's Open Sculling team race the Women's Championship single event at the HOCR 2010.

Our hard charging PBC Open Scullers are taking on a new challenge … keeping you, their extended PBC team, up to date on all of the great things they’re doing!

This first installment comes from Open Sculler Katie Stainken. You’ll learn more about Katie and the rest of the team as soon as they get their bios posted! Look for them on the Star in the next few weeks!

Here’s the latest from Katie:

It was awesome to see so many people attend the PBC Holiday Party this year! We really enjoyed decorating the ballroom, hosting the party, but most of all, chatting with fellow PBC’ers in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere, as opposed to the usual quick conversations on the dock.  Thanks to you, and some beautiful notecards produced by Susan Trice, we were able to raise about $1200 for the Potomac River Sports Foundation (PRSF) to help us with our training efforts throughout the year.  Many generous PBC members also brought gifts for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.  All in all, it was a great night for us and we hope you enjoyed yourselves, too.

We want to say something chipper here, but all we can think of is, "Yuck."

On the training side of things, we certainly have braved some unseasonably cold temperatures in the DC area this month. The ice continues to creep across the river, so we’ve already traded in our sculls and team boats for ergs.  Looks like all of those long rows out to Haines Point and up to Fletcher’s that were on the schedule will have to wait for now.  We don’t mind having to erg at the moment, though; it gives us a chance to rock out to tunes on our iPods while we workout, which is a nice change.  Our apologies in advance to those who come down to the boathouse in the morning for our music tastes!

Coming soon, look for a new Open Sculler website to be announced in the Star – complete with athlete bios!  We’re also planning an event for February, so as soon as the date is confirmed, we will let everyone know when to mark your calendars!

In the meantime, if you’re still in the gift-giving mood this holiday day season, please remember that your donations to the PRSF go to help PBC’s National Team athletes, and as always, are tax deductible!  To donate via check or PayPal, click here to go to the PRSF donation post on the Star.

Finally, for those of you who missed out on ordering your set of PBC notecards, they’re still available!  The Star will post all the information you need to get your very own set soon.

Thanks, again, for your support, PBC, and Happy Holidays from the Open Scullers!

People.  You know it.  And we know it. The Head of the Charles Regatta deserves much better than this from the Potomac Star. After all, Potomac Boat Club won the Men’s Championship Eight event at the very first Head of the Charles Regatta back in 1965! We go way back. But like a lot of folks who’ve been together for a long time, you get comfy, and well, sometimes you just kind of let things slide. It’s cute. Like love-handles and leaving your wet trou on the bathroom doorknob. Right?

Oh.

Anyway, below you’ll find the list of the PBC’ers competing at the Charles this weekend. As usual, we’re not sure if it’s complete or not, but from Beltway Bandits to WeCanRow, it’s the folks we could dig up. Below the list, you’ll find the event schedule with links back to the official HOCR site so you’ll know when to look for your favorite rowers on the course. (Remember, text in red means a link.)

If you’re rowing at the Charles and we left you off of the list, please send your name to Penelope at penelope@potomacstar.com, so we can make you famous.

And, Charlie, baby?  Please don’t let the stolen content and poorly formatted tables make you think we don’t care anymore.  We still feel that spark … even after 46 years.

GO PBC!!!

The Search for OBC’s Shew Continues

October 19, 2010 by · Comments Off

The Occoquan Chase is usually a fun little tune up before our big Head of the Charles weekend, but spirits were definitely dampened by the news that Julia Shew, member of Occoquan Boat Club, had gone missing on Saturday afternoon. The course was changed a bit on Sunday so as not to disrupt the search that continued throughout the day for the fit 64 year old experienced rower.

Shew started rowing as an undergraduate at University of California at Berkeley. As a founding member of Cal Women’s crew, she raced in the first women’s national regatta sponsored by the National Women’s Rowing Association held at Green Lake, Washington, in 1966.

In 2007, after having been away from the sport for 40 years, Shew was encouraged to row again by her instructor at Gold’s Gym in Lorton, also a member of Occoquan Boat Club. She attended a sculling camp on the Occoquan Reservoir in 2008, and was well on her way to completing a goal of rowing 3,000 miles by her birthday this month.  She planned on racing at the Chase on Sunday.

Winds were high on the day Julia Shew disappeared. There is still no word on her whereabouts. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, her husband Karl, and her family and friends.

Below are Potomac Boat Club’s results from the 2010 Occoquan Chase.  For all of the day’s results, please visit Ronin by clicking here.

PBC Men’s Sweep Practice Becomes Rescue Effort

August 10, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Bovo coaches the Men's Sweep Team on a less eventful day; Roosevelt Bridge in the distance.

At 6:30 am, there was already too much traffic upstream and Potomac Boat Club’s Men’s Sweep Team wanted to get in a decent technical row before leaving for Masters National Rowing Championships this week.  So, Marco Bovo, coach of the team, decided to do something different and started practice downstream instead.

Marco followed the PBC men’s eight and four as they warmed up close to the Virginia shoreline and rounded Theodore Roosevelt Island. About 150 meters from Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, Marco stopped the crews so they could hydrate before doing a few race starts.

Marta Ulbricht, cox of the four, and Tiffany Dao, cox of the eight, pointed their boats through an arch and awaited direction.  But when Marco signaled for the crews to start up again, Marta seemed uncharacteristically distracted.  Marco rushed over to see what was wrong.  As he approached, he saw two men on the bridge yelling and pointing to the water, so he rushed to the spot instead.  Suddenly, it was clear … someone had jumped.

Once Marco got there, he saw a woman just beneath the surface and tried to pull her limp body out of the  water.  Marta and Tiffany moved their boats closer to the spot, and Leo Hergenroeder, bow of the four, and Tim Baxter, bow of the eight, jumped in and swam over to help.

At the same time, the guys in the eight and four yelled up to the men on the bridge to call 911 and advise emergency personnel to meet them at the Thompson Boat Center.  Marco, Leo and Tim had managed to get the woman onto the launch, and Leo and Tim climbed aboard to keep her from rolling back into the river.

The eight and four headed to Thompson’s to meet Marco, Leo, and Tim on the dock and help get the woman out of the launch safely.  Once on the dock, Leo stayed next to the woman and spoke to her to keep her awake until paramedics arrived.

Bob Price, PBC president, who rowed stroke seat of the eight this morning, said, “I can’t tell you how proud I am of everyone. Marta is young, still in high school, but she showed a tremendous amount of maturity and common sense by not starting her crew and in getting Marco’s attention.  Marco went into instant rescue mode, and was trying to pull the woman out before we even knew what was going on.  Leo and Tim didn’t hesitate to jump in to help Marco get the woman into the launch.  And Leo’s actions on the dock probably made another critical difference in saving her life.”

Well, a pretty impressive way to spend your morning, guys! Congratulations on a job well-done to our PBC heroes, Marco, Marta, Leo and Tim, and the rest of the Men’s Sweep Team, who acted swiftly and courageously to save a life.

To the woman in the water, we wish you strength in your recovery, and to your family, the best of all things in the future.

Finally, that life ring in our logo makes sense.
