Charlie Butt established W-L Crew in 1949. W-L Crew first garnered national headlines for winning the Royal Henley Regatta in 1964 (first year a U.S. school participated) and again, in 1969. Between 1949 and 1987, W-L Crew won the National Scholastic title 12 times.

Ms. Samantha Byrd, chair of Potomac Boat Club’s Regatta Committee, announces that registration is open for the 2012 Charlie Butt Annual Scullers Head of the Potomac (SHOP).

The SHOP, scheduled for Sunday, September 30, has been held every year for the last 32 years in honor of legendary rowing coach Charlie Butt. Considered an important milestone on the fall racing calendar, the SHOP includes more than 40 sweep and sculling events with crews coming from all over North America and the world.

Last year, the PBC Regatta Committee has reworked the race schedule to better accommodate large entry events and provide more time between events for multi-entry participants. Please check the registration page linked above for important registration deadlines. SHOP Race Headquarters will be at Thompsons Boat Center.

A new dedicated SHOP site with registration info, waivers and other information is also coming soon!

Questions regarding the SHOP should be emailed to the Regatta Committee’s new SHOP co-chair, Peter Clements, at headofthepotomac@gmail.com. Volunteers, it’s never too early to make your availability known!

The Regatta Committee wishes you the best of luck as you finish up the summer racing season.

PBC men fall in line for head race season

Yep. Fall is here. After an insanely successful summer, PBC’s Men’s Sweep Team is gearing up for this weekend’s Scullers Head of the Potomac (SHOP), as well as another successful head race season. This may be the best fall for the men in a long time … but they usually do pretty well, right, PBC?!

Below are a few photos taken during yesterday’s deary, drizzly morning practice. Apologies for the fuzzy ones (photos, that is). We weren’t expecting it to be so dark for so long already!

Our 2010 Head of the Schuylkill Results

Last week, after the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, many of us packed up our gear, returned home, and declared an end to the head race season.

And some of us went back up the road to Philly for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (HOSR).

Maybe you needed a masochistic way to spend your Halloween weekend. Maybe the Penn AC party is still really worth the trip. Maybe you’re just a race junkie. Whatever the case, we hope you are now home safe and sound with pictures to share with the Potomac Star.

World Championships in NZ!

The U.S. National Team is headed to New Zealand … and we’re going with them!

World Rowing Championships will be held this year from October 31-November 7, on beautiful Lake Karapiro in the land of the Kiwis. UniversalSports.com will stream all 22 “A” finals LIVE followed by highlights and full replays.

Okay. So, it’s not exactly like being there, but think of it this way: no jetlag and you won’t have to quit your job to follow the team.

The 80-person roster includes 70 returning National Team members and 20 Olympians. Potomac Boat Club’s own Margot Shumway will compete in the women’s quad.

Forty-four members of the team, including Margot, competed last year at World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. The U.S. brought home seven medals from Poznan including gold in the women’s eight, women’s pair and men’s pair with coxswain; silver in the women’s four, lightweight men’s eight and women’s quad; and bronze in the lightweight women’s quad. Erin Cafaro and Susan Francia are back to defend their title in the women’s pair, while three members of the women’s eight return from the Beijing Olympics gold-medal lineup.

Lake Karapiro. Nothing like the sweet smell of sulphur in the morning!

Kiwi legend has it that Lake Karapiro was the stronghold of Maori chief O-Te-Ihingarangi. Its name comes from “kara,” which means stone, and “piro,” which means evil-smelling. We’re not sure what they’ve done about the smell, but today, New Zealanders claim Karapiro is one of the finest, most picturesque rowing venues in the world. From what we’ve seen, it’s gorgeous … and we don’t care what it smells like as long as it means gold for our U.S. Team!

The 30th Annual Charlie Butt Scullers Head of the Potomac (SHOP) will be held this year on Sunday, September 26. Regular registration closed on Saturday, September 11, 2010, but you can still register until this Saturday, September 18, by going to Ronin, registering, and by paying a small late fee, in addition to your registration fee.

After Saturday, not even your saddest puppy-dog eyes, most emphatic “pretty pleases,” or largest offers of cash to the Potomac Star at largeoffersofcash@potomacstar.com (now accepting PayPal) will get you racing at the SHOP. No Race Day registration anymore, either. So, go ahead. Register already.

I’m particularly interested in getting our competitive teams to respond as groups, and we’ll find fun and exciting group activities. For example, last year, the Masters Rowing Program (MRP) handled all of the launch preparation, and it was great. One big job and they independently figured out who could do it and when.

Here’s the background. The Regatta is on SUNDAY, September 26th. We need volunteers who can work (i) morning shift – 7:30 a.m. – noon, (ii) afternoon shift – noon – 4:00 p.m., or (iii) all day. Good intentions aside, please don’t say you can work in that 45 minute gap between the masters 4 and your spa appointment – you get no good conscience points and it doesn’t help us. AM, PM or all day.

So, if you can take us up on this Call to Arms, PLEASE DO THIS (and read carefully): send an email to headofthepotomac@gmail.com, and state whether you can work morning, afternoon or all day, whether you can drive a launch, and include your cell phone number and email address. Then save the date on your calendar, and you’ll hear back from us.

Finally, our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of the great and good-natured volunteers from last year. It was a terrific day that went ultra smooth — it was wonderful for Potomac Boat Club to host such an event.

Potomac’s 2010 Masters Nationals Results

Only white caps would have made this more fun for our Chuck Selden.

Masters National Championships 2010 had us thinking: Where is it almost always perfect rowing weather? Wherever it is, we want to live there.Â Or at least race there. At Masters Nationals in Camden last year, the sun and heat were absolutely punishing. At Masters Nationals in Camden this year, the wind definitely got the best of some.

That’s okay, though, right, PBC? It’s not the moment that defines us. We define the moment. No matter the conditions. (We’re watching the PGA Championship while our results roll in from Camden.)Â Besides, if we didn’t have conditions to complain about, we’d call it, um … bowling?

Anyway, at the end four days, our PBC masters pulled off another stellar MatNats performance, and walked away with their annual haul of gold, silver, and bronze hardware. They also earned us second in the overall team point trophy! (And, folks, that’s second only to the most populous rowing club in the universe, Saugatuck.) Impressive stuff.

Is that a giant trophy you're holding or are you just happy to see us? Members of PBC's Men's Sweep Team at the conclusion of another successful MatNats.

[This is a retread of sorts.Â What can we say? It's Masters Nationals in Camden, again!Â We have members saving people during practice. Juniors winning medals in Eastern Europe. The postcard is what we could do for now. Next year, MatNats will be in Oklahoma City. Maybe we'll stick a cowboy hat up there or something.]

Hey!Â With most folks headedÂ down to the Carolina beaches this time of year, why not head up the roadÂ instead?Â This weekend, a short 2-3 hour drive north on 95 will land you smack dab in the middle of some hot race action. Where? Why, in always-lovely, ever-effervescent (drum roll) … Camden, New Jersey!

From Thursday, August 12, 2010 to Sunday, August 15, 2010, PBC’s Masters rowers will join almost 1800 others out on the Cooper River for Masters National Championships 2010.Â We’re pretty confident our folks will be leading the pack in more than a few events, so go cheer them on!

[We even put together a little map for you and directions to the venue. Scroll down to see it. We wouldn't want you to end up in Philly.]
