From Camden to Canada, Potomac Boat Club’s most experienced this week head north again to St. Catherines, Ontario, for the 2010 FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta.  The four days of racing starts tomorrow, September 2nd, and culminates on September 5th, with a usually raucous party. (And we’ve seen pictures of our MRP at this party from years past, fully enjoying their time away from home waters. Let’s just say that one year, they got the cops on the dance floor … to dance!

But with over 2,700 entries and 300 clubs participating, the racing does get serious, folks. See for yourself!

Camilla strikes again, this time with Kathy Hughes in the J-G 2x!

And maybe we’ll get lucky again and have more guest reporting from the event.  Check back over the next few days for updates!  [Update: Folks are writing us! (Squeal) See who below!]

Good luck to everyone and … GO, PBC!

Winners of the Women's H4+: Potomac's Marilyn Means, Camilla Durfee, Gretchen Ellsworth, Sarah Grady and Sally Sternbach.

Potomac’s 2010 Masters Nationals Results

August 15, 2010 by admin · 1 Comment

Only white caps would have made this more fun for our Chuck Selden.

Masters National Championships 2010 had us thinking: Where is it almost always perfect rowing weather? Wherever it is, we want to live there.  Or at least race there. At Masters Nationals in Camden last year, the sun and heat were absolutely punishing. At Masters Nationals in Camden this year, the wind definitely got the best of some.

But that’s okay, right, PBC? It’s not the moment that defines us. We define the moment. No matter the conditions. (Yes, we’re watching the PGA Championship and our results roll in from Camden.)  Besides, if we didn’t have conditions to complain about, we’d call it, um … bowling?

Anyway, at the end four days, our PBC masters pulled off another stellar MatNats performance, and walked away with their annual haul of gold, silver, and bronze hardware. They also earned us second in the overall team point trophy! And, folks, that’s second only to the most populous rowing club in the universe, Saugatuck. Impressive stuff.

Is that a giant trophy you're holding or are you just happy to us?! Members of PBC's Men's Sweep Team at the conclusion of another successful MatNats.

By the way, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out Ed Ryan and Debbie Charles Chisholm reporting from Camden under “Recent Comments” on the right side of the Star.  Our thanks, again, to them!

Awesome job, everyone!

Potomac’s 2010 Quaker City Masters Results

August 7, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

The beer mug: International symbol of laid back.

The Quaker City Masters Regatta held on the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, July 31, 2010, is billed every year as the world’s most laid back regatta.  Laid back or not, we sure came back with a lot of gold.  (Or did they give out mugs?)

Check out our results below.  Congratulations to Nick Holland, Ed Ryan, Bill Cox, Cal Sutliff and the rest of the PBC folks who went up to Philly and cruised to first place finishes.

Potomac’s Results for Diamond States 2010

July 25, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

The record setting temps gave an all new meaning to the heat medals awarded today at the Howard B. Smith Diamond State Regatta (aka “Diamond States”) held on Noxontown Pond in Delaware.

Below are the results we found on Ronin earlier in the day.*  (Wha …? Interference with Lane 4?! Pfffbt.)

To see all the results, click here.

* Events 38 and higher were canceled due to unsafe conditions (read: the storm, not the temps).

We LOVE the IDR.

IDR

Don't let the slight flutter of the flags fool you: It's hot as hizzell out there.

Funny. We used to dread the Independence Day Regatta (IDR) in Philadelphia. Nothing against the regatta itself, of course. It’s expertly run. It’s scenic and historic. And, yes, we admit it … we kind of dig the “old skool” style of some of the Philly refs. (We can’t help it.)

It’s really just everything else that bummed us out. Fighting the holiday weekend traffic on the way up there. The parking (or lack thereof) once we got there. Phillies Fans (just kidding; we’ll keep baseball out of this). Driving all the way back to DC with bellies full of meat (cheesesteaks) after a million races.

Anyway. You know what we’re talking about.

So, why would we love the IDR so much now?  Because darn if they (… and we’re guessing ”they” are the Schuylkill Navy’s Carole and Clete Graham) didn’t go make it SO easy for us to find every single Potomac Boat Club athlete signed up to race this weekend! All 45 or so of you!

Below is the list of the PBC folks you’ll want to root for - or watch out for - this weekend up in Philly.  See the numbers by each name?  Those are event numbers. Links to events and race schedules are below the list.

We just hope it’s as easy to get the big medal count next week after the regatta.  Row hard, PBC!

Potomac heads home to the Charles

October 15, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Potomac BC Head of the Charles '65

The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) is like homecoming weekend for many rowers, especially for us at Potomac Boat Club.  We’ve been there each of the regatta’s 45 years, winning the Men’s Championship Eight event in year one.  When not racing, it’s our opportunity to catch up with old friends and teammates, some we haven’t seen in years.

If you’re going to the Charles this weekend, make sure you get to the racecourse in time to cheer on all the folks keeping PBC’s rich HOCR racing tradition alive.  As you’ll find below, there are quite of few of them, so remember to wear layers, bring the throat lozenges, and maybe make friends with the guy with the flask (um, if you’re into that kind of thing).

Oh, in case you weren’t at the Semi-Annual Meeting last week, the Board announced the first winners of the David Challinor Head of the Charles Memorial Fund awards!  Congratulations to Margot Shumway and Bill Greer!

Best of luck to all of you this weekend … and a special “go get ‘em, ladies” from the Star to PBC-sponsored WeCanRow DC as they compete in their very first Head of the Charles Regatta!
