Potomac’s 2010 Masters Nationals Results

August 15, 2010 by admin · 1 Comment

Only white caps would have made this more fun for our Chuck Selden.

Masters National Championships 2010 had us thinking: Where is it almost always perfect rowing weather? Wherever it is, we want to live there.  Or at least race there. At Masters Nationals in Camden last year, the sun and heat were absolutely punishing. At Masters Nationals in Camden this year, the wind definitely got the best of some.

But that’s okay, right, PBC? It’s not the moment that defines us. We define the moment. No matter the conditions. (Yes, we’re watching the PGA Championship and our results roll in from Camden.)  Besides, if we didn’t have conditions to complain about, we’d call it, um … bowling?

Anyway, at the end four days, our PBC masters pulled off another stellar MatNats performance, and walked away with their annual haul of gold, silver, and bronze hardware. They also earned us second in the overall team point trophy! And, folks, that’s second only to the most populous rowing club in the universe, Saugatuck. Impressive stuff.

Is that a giant trophy you're holding or are you just happy to us?! Members of PBC's Men's Sweep Team at the conclusion of another successful MatNats.

By the way, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out Ed Ryan and Debbie Charles Chisholm reporting from Camden under “Recent Comments” on the right side of the Star.  Our thanks, again, to them!

Awesome job, everyone!

Potomac’s Results for Capital Sprints 2010

July 14, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Capital Rowing Club

The new temporary facility for the Anacostia Community Rowing Association, upstream from the old site.

Capital Sprints is a challenge to say the least.  You really earn that killer end-of-the-regatta-BBQ just getting through the start.  Add wind, rain .. and God bless those Cap Sprints referees.

For those of us from PBC who make it there, it’s always worth it to spend some quality time with our friends from the Anacostia even if they hate on the rest of us (loudly via their public address system) for not showing up, and try to get us to admit that PBC is scared of them.  (Okay. Fine. Can we have a beer now?)

Anyway, we just want you to know, CRC, that our low attendance at Cap Sprints really has nothing to do with you.  Stop taking it personally. We really dig you. In fact, socially, we probably should be more like you.

Just one thing, though: you know how you kept announcing over the PA that PBC only had one person racing?  Well, we had at least a smattering … a smattering that pretty much placed first or second.

Thanks for the beer and as always, for the great time!

Below are PBC’s results from Cap Sprints.

140th Anniversary Party
Saturday, September 12
7:00 - 10:00 PM
Cocktail Attire
Silent Auction

RSVP by Tuesday, September 8

This is your 140th Anniversary Party Reminder!

Potomac Boat Club’s President, the Board of Governors, and the Social Committee request your presence next weekend at the boathouse for a very special celebration … PBC’s 140th Anniversary!

The festivities will kick off on Saturday, September 12th, at 7:00 PM and continue until 10:00 PM.  The Social Committee anticipates many will want to be part of this historic night, so it is limiting guests to one per member to give everyone a chance to be there. Also, you must RSVP prior to the event, and the deadline is Tuesday, September 8th.  Let the party planners know you’ll be there by sending an email right now to PBCRSVP@yahoo.com.

What to wear?  The Social Committee is calling for cocktail attire, but valet parking will be available, so consider it an opportunity to strap on those 5-inch heels or show off that jacket and tie combo your teammates have never seen.  What about the kids?  Sorry. They have to stay home for this one, but the Committee promises plenty of beer, wine, soft drinks and hors d’oeuvres to keep your mind off of what they might be doing to the poor baby sitter you hired for the evening.

Over the last 140 years, we’ve become well known for our spirit of competition, and this anniversary party will reflect that.  No, not a hat race.  The Social Committee has put together a silent auction to benefit the Potomac River Sports Foundation and our Open Sculling Program.  Your fellow members have generously donated a variety of items for you to bid on throughout the evening, including weekend getaways, theater and athletic event tickets, special services, and much more, so get your checkbooks ready!  You might even get a sneak preview of the auction items in the Star later this week.

Stay tuned for last minute details!
