Club Rowing

Head of the Potomac 2008Club Rowing News

Chaired by Ms. Sylvia Frayne, PBC’s Club Rowing Committee (CRC) manages and maintains a fleet of high performance rowing equipment and recreational boats intended to serve the needs of members who row and race independent of a PBC coached program.

In 2008, the CRC took delivery of new racing shells, including a Filippi 2x christened the Cynthia Cole as a tribute to Ms. Cynthia Cole, rowing coach, founder of the Washington Rowing School, and former president of PBC.  Another Filippi 2x arrived for the CRC fleet in late 2008, and has been named The Tomahawk.  The name is a reference to the weapon commonly used by the Native American Algonquin people who once occupied the Potomac River valley.  In 2009, the committee plans to purchase a new club 4x/-, which will add four sweep and four sculling seats to the fleet.

New racks 3

In September 2008, the Board, the CRC and the House Committee collaborated on new boat racks for two of the Club’s most heavily used boat bays. The response has been extremely positive, and the Board anticipates that the new racks will cut down on boat damage, as well as make it more convenient for members to access equipment. To compliment this project, the CRC plans to create easier to read signage for each rack space that will include information on boat type, the size athlete for which the boat is best suited, and any additional boat storage directions.

Finally, the CRC plans to deploy a Club Rowing survey, in order to better understand the current demographic and rowing needs of its constituency. The survey will include questions about equipment usage and preference, communications, and other subjects important to fine tuning the CRC fleet. Look for notice of this important survey after the beginning of the new year, right here, on The Potomac Star.
