Finish Line looks to be the last word in boat repairs

Finish Line's Dan Reardon shows off an impressively long paint booth

The area’s rowing community has been eager to take advantage of a new competitor in the shell repair space, and now it can.

Finish Line's trailer pulls away from Potomac Boat Club with its first round of pick ups

Strategically located between the rowing hub cities of Washington and Philadelphia in Baltimore, Finish Line Shell Repair launched on January 24th, 2013, opening the doors to a state of the art 5,000 square-foot shell repair facility complete with a paint booth long enough to accommodate an entire eight.

PBC senior member Alex DelSordo, and president and chief executive officer of Finish Line, collaborated with his father, Sandy “Papa Del” DelSordo, and long time friend Dan Reardon, to create the company’s business model built on excellent customer service and expert level repairs.

“As both an athlete and coach, I started to see a real need for a full-service shell repair company in this region that pays as much attention to its customers as it does on high quality work,” said Alex.  “Collaborating with my father [Sandy DelSordo] was a natural idea, and when I ran the idea for Finish Line by him last year, he was on board right away.”

The elder DelSordo knows what he’s talking about, too. With more than 30 years of boat repair expertise, Sandy DelSordo can take credit for the high quality workmanship coming out of Finish Line.

Today, after only a few months in business, Finish Line has repaired more than a dozen boats for rowing programs including Potomac Boat Club, Bishop O’Connell, St. John’s High School, Walt Whitman High School, George Washington University and several others in the region.  And so far, Finish Line’s clients are enthusiastic with the results.

New paint gleams on one happy customer's private single

“With debris and a steady increase in boating traffic on the Potomac, a boat can experience damage that makes it unavailable to a program during critical training periods,” said a recent client and senior member of Potomac Boat Club.  “Finish Line worked hard to keep me in the loop regarding the repair status of one of our most in demand hulls, beat our deadline by weeks, and in the end, did a flawless job on the work itself.”

But damage to a hull doesn’t have to be major for Finish Line to take on the job.  In fact, the operation is suited perfectly to repair anything from a minor scrape on a single to the full refurbishment of an eight.  Maybe just as important, Finish Line pledges to keep its customers updated along the way so they will know exactly when to expect to get their boats back on the water.

“We have decades of experience in boat repair and in the sport of rowing at Finish Line, but we still took time to research the latest industry practices to ensure we were offering only the best to the East Coast rowing community once we finally opened our doors,” said Alex DelSordo.

Previous damage to a Filippi eight is now invisible

It looks like they’ve done just that. Customer response to Finish Line has been almost as impressive as Finish Line’s response time.

“We already saw a little damage this season, and sent the boat to Finish Line since they had done such a nice job on a refurbishment earlier this year,” said Penelope Wrenn, senior member and chair of the PBC Racing Committee. “I’m not endorsing one company over another, but let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised to get the hull back looking flawless later the same week … that’s an almost unheard of turnaround time.”

PBC’s John Ryan rows to number one in the nation

Ryan after winning the Marathon event at the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints

John Ryan started the year out strong for Potomac Boat Club and our Men’s Team by winning the 42,195m (Marathon) Men’s Heavyweight event at the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints.

Ryan went unchallenged in his event last weekend, but remarkably still pulled himself to number one in the nation and seventh in the world.

“It’s early in the season and a new event, but I’ll take it,” said Ryan.

[Heck yeah, you will!]

Johnny Forrest also grabbed a gold for PBC in the Masters Men 30 – 39, 30 minute row, along with Laurence Yaffe, John Walsh, Greg LeSage (6:19.3!), and Steve Schmitt (6:57!) in their respective events.

First place finishes by the men mean we have a team that could give the California crews a run for their money at the San Diego Crew Classic in late March.  But we won’t jinx them.  Let’s just say we have a bit of confidence left over from a very successful 2011.

[Um, and let's just say we didn't see that their new coach brought back gold in the Veteran Women 50 - 59, 30 minute row ... to the Alexandria Crew Boosters Club!  Hey, now?!]

Great job, everyone.  And thanks to John, Johnny and the rest of the guys for kicking off what is sure to be another successful year of PBC racing!

[And a special congrats to our Washington-Lee kids Patsy Zetkulic, Matthew Zetkulic, Emma Sheehy, and Grayson Steigler on their first place finishes, as well!]

PBC men fall in line for head race season

September 24, 2011 by · Comments Off

Yep. Fall is here. After an insanely successful summer, PBC’s Men’s Sweep Team is gearing up for this weekend’s Scullers Head of the Potomac (SHOP), as well as another successful head race season. This may be the best fall for the men in a long time … but they usually do pretty well, right, PBC?!

Below are a few photos taken during yesterday’s deary, drizzly morning practice.  Apologies for the fuzzy ones (photos, that is). We weren’t expecting it to be so dark for so long already!

See you at the SHOP on Sunday!

Potomac’s Results for Diamond States 2010

July 25, 2010 by · Comments Off

The record setting temps gave an all new meaning to the heat medals awarded today at the Howard B. Smith Diamond State Regatta (aka “Diamond States”) held on Noxontown Pond in Delaware.

Below are the results we found on Ronin earlier in the day.*  (Wha …? Interference with Lane 4?! Pfffbt.)

To see all the results, click here.

* Events 38 and higher were canceled due to unsafe conditions (read: the storm, not the temps).

PBC Men go for a cuptastic Henley 2010

      June 24, 2010 by · Comments Off

      Henley 2007

A few of the guys from PBC's 2007 Henley Men's Club 8+ above return to the 2010 crew to make another run at it.

From June 30 to July 4, Potomac Boat Club Men’s Sweep Team will compete for the Thames Challenge Cup, the prize awarded to the winner of the Men’s Club Eight event at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.

The regatta, first held in 1839, takes place annually on the River Thames near the town of Henley-on-Thames, England. More than 500 crews from 20 nations will compete this year, including our own.

PBC men last competed at Henley in 2007. They were the only U.S. crew to make it to the Thames Challenge Cup quarterfinals. A few of the guys from 2007 are returning this year and hope to better their result. We think they will.

The 2010 crew includes Apollo Nguyen (cox), Chad Jungbluth, Paul Holland, John Forrest, Mike McCarthy, Bob Price (PBC President), Brian Wood, Nick Davies, and Tom Brock.

PBC's 2010 Henley team prepares last month at home

Each event at Henley is a single-elimination competition; in other words, you could be one and done, or get to play all week.  Boats race two at a time down a 2,112 meter-long course so narrow, there are only a few meters to spare when side-by-side. Adding to the potential drama (and undoubtedly, the regatta”s popularity with spectators), the course is lined by floating, unforgiving wooden bars or booms. Steering into the boom is known by onlookers as a “Henley Royal F[oul]-up,” and offending coxswains must wear crowns emblazoned with the same for the remainder of the regatta. (Just kidding about that last part. Maybe.)

On Saturday, June 26th, if all the guys make it into town on time, PBC will tune up and shake off the jet lag at the Reading Town Regatta.  Once racing starts at Henley, you can follow the guys as they battle through the competition by signing up for Twitter, Facebook or any of the other Henley results services offered at http://hrr.co.uk/pdisp.php?pid=316.  In the meantime, below we’ve included an alphabetical list of the clubs PBC will have to beat to advance, followed by a list of past PBC winners at Henley.

Safe travels and best of luck to Apollo and our crew. Row hard, guys!

Road trip … MatNats in Camden!

      August 6, 2009 by · Comments Off

With most folks headed down to the Carolina beaches this time of year, why not head up the road instead?  Next weekend, a short 2-3 hour drive north on 95 will land you smack dab in the middle of some hot race action in always-lovely … Camden, New Jersey!

From August 13-16, PBC’s Masters rowers will join almost 1800 others out on the Cooper River for Masters National Championships 2009.  We’re pretty confident our folks will be leading the pack in more than a few events, so go cheer them on!

To find out who will be wearing the white star, and in which of 200 events, visit the PBC Masters Nationals lineups page on Regatta Central here.

We even put together a little map for you and directions to the venue. We wouldn’t want you to end up in Philly.
