From Camden to Canada, Potomac Boat Club’s most experienced this week head north again to St. Catherines, Ontario, for the 2010 FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta.  The four days of racing starts tomorrow, September 2nd, and culminates on September 5th, with a usually rowdy party. (And we’ve seen pictures of our MRP at this party from years past, fully enjoying their time away from home waters. Let’s just say that one year, they got the cops on the dance floor … to dance!)

But with over 2,700 entries and 300 clubs participating, the racing does get serious, folks. See for yourself!

Camilla strikes again, this time with Kathy Hughes in the J-G 2x!

Good luck to everyone and … GO, PBC!

On the first day of competition, Camilla Durfee and Kathy Hughes did us proud and bagged the first medals of FISA for PBC by winning their flight in the G-J 2x. They fought off a surge by host St. Catharines in the final meters and finished with a well-deserved gold medal.
The other PBC women’s boat competing today, the 4+, finished 4th in our flight after loud cheering from the banks of the race course helped spur us on to the finish line.
We had a variety of seasons here today – sun, rain, clouds, tail winds, cross winds…all to prepare us for the weekend when the temps are supposed to plunge and the winds are forecast to blow us around a lot. Good thing we had lots of practice with windy courses at MatNats!

Another day of rain, howling winds (that knocked down and broke one of our tents!) but also of BLING on friday.
The sun came out briefly as Camilla Durfee picked up her second medal stroking the women’s H 4+ with Gretchen Ellsworth, Sally Sternbach & Marilyn Means. The ladies worked hard to push back challenges in a very tight race. YEA Potomac!!!!

One last note from north of the border before we get in our car….Camilla made it a hat-trick on Sunday when she and Cal won in the 2x. Some Potomac men were in a mixed B8+ that also took home a medal on the last day of competition in the mixed events.
Unfortunately high winds forced organizers to cancel most of the events on Saturday. We understood the problem when we saw an empty 4+ being towed back to the dock — EMPTY. After several laps around the warm-up area our women’s C4+ was sent back to the dock and after nearly 2 hours of waiting the organizers decided they had to cancel the rest of the day.
But overall it was a good regatta for PBC and lots of fun despite the weather! Sorry for leaving out some of the men’s boats here but I am not sure who was in which races.

Posted on behalf of Gretchen Ellsworth; a photo of the winning team is above and will be in the Gallery (see Gallery tab):
