Potomac’s 2010 Masters Nationals Results

August 15, 2010 by admin

Only white caps would have made this more fun for our Chuck Selden.

Masters National Championships 2010 had us thinking: Where is it almost always perfect rowing weather? Wherever it is, we want to live there.  Or at least race there. At Masters Nationals in Camden last year, the sun and heat were absolutely punishing. At Masters Nationals in Camden this year, the wind definitely got the best of some.

That’s okay, though, right, PBC? It’s not the moment that defines us. We define the moment. No matter the conditions. (We’re watching the PGA Championship while our results roll in from Camden.)  Besides, if we didn’t have conditions to complain about, we’d call it, um … bowling?

Anyway, at the end four days, our PBC masters pulled off another stellar MatNats performance, and walked away with their annual haul of gold, silver, and bronze hardware. They also earned us second in the overall team point trophy! (And, folks, that’s second only to the most populous rowing club in the universe, Saugatuck.) Impressive stuff.

Is that a giant trophy you're holding or are you just happy to see us? Members of PBC's Men's Sweep Team at the conclusion of another successful MatNats.

By the way, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out Ed Ryan and Debbie Charles Chisholm reporting from Camden under “Recent Comments” on the right side of the Star.  Again, our thanks to them!

Awesome job, everyone!

Steve Vermillion gave us permission to post his message to the Yahoo Group regarding PBC’s MatNats 2010 Results. Darn it … he said it better than we did! (Thanks, Steve!)

Great results. Wish I was there.

Every year what and how you win is a bit different. I’m especially happy the men won the B8+ which is traditionally the fastest boat at the regatta and the trophy has my name on it! PBC has won that race before, most notably at Oak Ridge in 2007, when we pulled 2:48 for the fastest time ever recorded (in any boat class) at Masters Nationals.

Everyone contributed this year: men and women sweep, men and women scullers, A through J, gold silver and bronze. Gold medals in 12 different events. And the Men’s Sweep Team grabbed two of the fastest three times of the regatta, both times faster than the A8+.

Overall PBC finished 2nd of 135 teams — PBCs highest finish ever. We scored most overall points of any PBC appearance at Masters Nationals I could find, with points in 44 events, out of 47 events entered.

(By contrast, our competition Saugatuck RC, the overall winner, came with 85 rowers and entered over 100 races, scoring points in 74 events.)

And keep in mind, all this while PBC was being honorably represented at Worlds and Jr. Worlds. Impressive.
