Making weekend plans? Let’s go to MatNats!

August 11, 2010 by admin

[This is a retread of sorts.  What can we say? It's Masters Nationals in Camden, again!  We have members saving people during practice. Juniors winning medals in Eastern Europe. The postcard is what we could do for now. Next year, MatNats will be in Oklahoma City. Maybe we'll stick a cowboy hat up there or something.]

Hey!  With most folks headed down to the Carolina beaches this time of year, why not head up the road instead?  This weekend, a short 2-3 hour drive north on 95 will land you smack dab in the middle of some hot race action. Where? Why, in always-lovely, ever-effervescent (drum roll) … Camden, New Jersey!

From Thursday, August 12, 2010 to Sunday, August 15, 2010, PBC’s Masters rowers will join almost 1800 others out on the Cooper River for Masters National Championships 2010.  We’re pretty confident our folks will be leading the pack in more than a few events, so go cheer them on!

[We even put together a little map for you and directions to the venue. Scroll down to see it. We wouldn't want you to end up in Philly.]

To find out who will be wearing the white star, and in which of 200 events, visit the PBC Masters Nationals lineups page on Regatta Central here.  Click here for live race results.

And fine. For those of you who would rather watch from the air conditioned comfort of your own homes, USRowing will stream live video of the finals at http://rowing.teamusa.org/live. (We were planning to tell you eventually!)

The PBC women had a strong start to their MatNats competition. On Thursday we won medals in all events we entered — silver for the Open G 4+ and for the Open F2x and bronze for the Club D 8+.
Three more days to go and we’re hoping to keep bringing home the bling!

A Thursday evening report from Masters Nationals:

    It’s Camden. Say no more.

After months of training in the ultra-heat and calm weather of the Potomac, the Cooper River on Thursday provided a significant change of venue, with temps in the high 70′s and very strong winds straight up the course, making these ‘sprint’ races very long affairs indeed. The winds weren’t terribly fair either, with a noticable advantage being in lane 6 and closer to the sheltered shore. (At least that’s how I’m explaining our very rough row in the 2x over in lane 2.) How strong were the winds? Whitecaps at the start and a flipped single in the Men’s D 1x final (no slouch in that boat either – he had to get thru heats and semi’s just to get there) — where our own Rich Lewis nabbed 3rd place, and almost won the whole shooting match! But still much good racing – there are a lot of very fast dudes and dudettes up here.

    And Friday’s report:

Potomac had a tremendous day today. Much gold, silver and bronze bling worn around the necks of Potomac rowers today, both sweep and scullers – check out the results. As for conditions, definitely better than Thursday but still a good strong headwind. On average, added about 30 seconds to most races. Tomorrow is supposed to be better. Also checked out the Cooper River Boathouse – what a nice place that is. A model of a ‘community/university’ collaboration on a rowing facility (it also serves as Rutgers’ boathouse).

That’s it. Big day tomorrow for lots of crews!

Another great day of rowing on Saturday with Potomac doing well in both men’s and women’s events.
By the end of competition on Saturday we were in 2nd place overall for the points trophy behind Saugatuck. The women are in 3rd place as are the men.
So we’ll be doing lots of cheering and hard rowing on the last day of the races.
The WeCanRow group of breast cancer survivors will also be rowing on Sunday in a race of cancer survivors at the lunch break. So if you see any of the women in pink please give them a big cheer too.
