Float Repair Day Photos

Chuck Selden surfaces with lunch for the work crew.

Who says watching paint dry isn’t fun?

Okay, so we didn’t paint the dock or watch it dry yesterday, but we did watch Chuck Selden and Cal Sutliff get the float repairs done, and that was fun.  Or at least interesting.

Check out the photos from Float Repair Day 2009 below.  Chuck Selden and Cal Sutliff went below deck. Mike Silveus, Mike Malone, Bob Price, Jim Hatch and Owen Lewis stayed topside to provide back up support.

If you’re interested in volunteering for Paint the Dock Day 2009 (Saturday, September 12), look for messages via the members’ Yahoo Group from House Committee chair, Mike Silveus.

Let’s be less gross this year - Help keep PBC free of H1N1!

August 30, 2009 by admin · 1 Comment

The H1N1 virus is supposed to make flu season 2009 especially nasty, so cleaning up after ourselves and doing whatever we need to ensure our best chance at staying healthy is no joke.

For the sake of your teammates, your family, and even yourself, please remember to take the following precautions around the boathouse:

Wash your workout gear daily, and only wear laundered gear to the Club.

DSC02713

Use me!

Wash your hands with soap and water before and after practice, especially when using shared equipment. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective, and disinfecting wipes are already available around the boathouse.  Look for them, and use them!

On and off the water, make sure to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and do it with your arm or shoulder instead of your hands.

After you erg, use the spray disinfectant and paper towels available in the Ballroom to wipe off the erg handles, the seat, and wherever else you may have shed biological material.

Not awesome.

And by the way, please don’t forget to wipe your sweat off the floor when you’re done on the erg. Making a big pool of sweat may be proof you worked out incredibly hard, but leaving it there for someone else to deal with only means you’re an incredibly inconsiderate you-know-what. The photo (left) of the running river of sweat was taken on Saturday, August 22. There were paper towels and a squirt bottle full of disinfectant not ten feet away. We say, check the security cameras!  The person who did this probably took the crap in the launch a month or so ago.

[Yes. That's right. Someone defecated in one of the launches.  Don't blame the messenger. We are as disgusted are you are. Hey, erg-sweat-leaver-launch-crapper ... Stop it already. It's not funny. It's just wrong on so many levels.]

Finally, if you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home until you have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours or diagnosed as non-contagious by your physician.

For the latest on the H1N1 flu virus, including symptoms and what you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your community, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm.

Awesome finish for Margot!

August 30, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Love this photo of Margot. Think she's happy with her finish? You bet!

WAY TO GO, MARGOT!

World Championships wraps up today in Poznan, and we imagine that our Margot Shumway and her coach Matt Madigan are leaving with more than a few great memories from Margot’s final on Friday, August 28.

Here is what USRowing had to say about the race:  “In the women’s single sculls, 2008 Olympian Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio) dominated her race to win by 3.77 seconds and finish in 13th place overall. The U.S. sculler took the lead early and widened the gap with Norway’s Tale Gjoertz in the final stretch to cross in an 8:26.17. Norway crossed second in an 8:29.94, followed by Spain’s Nuria Dominguez Asensio third in an 8:41.42.”

Now, if you want some real behind the scenes insight, you need to check out Margot’s mom Julia’s blog.  There, not only will you find the Row2k.com photos leading up to the one above, but a note Margot sent her mom the night before the race that really is a must-read.  [We're just dorky enough to admit that it left us a little misty over here this morning!  (sniff)]

We are so proud of you, Margot!  Have a safe trip home, and great job!

Potomac grabs third overall at 2009 Masters Nationals

August 24, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Congratulations to all of our Potomac Boat Club masters for an impressive showing at the 2009 Masters National Championship Regatta! Their combined effort pushed PBC out of a crowded field of almost 150 competitor clubs into third place in overall team points! Great job, everyone!

This year, our women’s Masters Rowing Program (MRP) sent 22 more athletes to nationals than it did just one year ago. And the numbers paid off. The 26-member team added 122.75 points to the scoreboard for PBC, and finished strong with the seventh highest women’s point total of 84 clubs.

The PBC Men’s Sweep Team fielded fewer athletes than we might have expected for an east coast located championship. Still, with only 14 rowers in heavy rotation, the team managed to pull away with several national titles. Along with PBC scullers Peter Pietra, Cal Sutliff, Ed Ryan, and Bill Cox, they earned 204.50 points, and finished third out of 95 clubs in total men’s points.

If there was a standout club performer throughout the four days, it had to be MRP member and perennial PBC favorite, Camilla Durfee. Camilla raced to five gold medals and one silver in a combination of women’s, mixed and comp boat events. She gets our vote for regatta MVP!

Hard fought battles aside, in the end PBC was no match for sheer size … club size, that is. With a whopping 831.50 points, Saugatuck Rowing Club’s cast of hundreds easily walked away with the overall team title. Minneapolis Rowing Club finished second with 399.75 points, followed closely by PBC in third with 342.25 points.

(We’re not bitter, but um … maybe there should be a category for clubs without full-service dining? Oh. That sounded bitter. Sorry.)

With 147 clubs competing for national titles in more than 200 events, this year’s Masters Nationals was the largest in history. Check out our top results below.

(They’re pretty good considering we just row around here … and make our own food! Oh. Sorry. There we go, again.)

Margot to race in repechages on Tuesday

August 23, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Our Margot Shumway certainly fought the good fight this morning in the first heat of the women’s single sculls at World Championships in Poland. Margot, stroke of the U.S. women’s quad at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, sat in third place for the first 1,000 meters before eventually slipping back to sixth.

Lucerne gold-medalist Mirka Knapkova of the Czech Republic won the heat with a time of 7:33.07, followed by three-time Olympic medalist Katherine Granger of Great Britain with a time of 7:36.59. Margot finished with a time of 7:46.69, and will race in the repechages on Tuesday, August 25.

In other Team USA rowing news, the U.S. women’s pair, men’s pair with coxswain and lightweight men’s eight finished first in their heats, while the women’s double sculls and the men’s pair crews finished second to advance. Eleven U.S. crews will race tomorrow, Monday, August 24.

To catch live coverage of tomorrow’s races, and Margot in the reps on Tuesday (6:30 AM, Eastern), click here.  Get special coverage provided by Margot’s mom Julia, on the scene in Poznan, by visiting her blog here.  Finals (August 29-30) will be streamed here.

Our continued best to Margot and the rest of the team!

Register for the 29th Annual Charlie Butt Scullers’ Head of the Potomac

August 21, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Men's 8s jockey for position at Key Bridge during the Scullers' Head of the Potomac (M. Jantzen '08)

Registration is now open!

Potomac Boat Club’s Regatta Committee is proud to announce the 29th annual Charlie Butt Scullers’ Head of the Potomac (SHOP) will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009.

Once considered a tune up regatta for the Head of the Charles in mid-October, the SHOP today is a milestone on the fall racing calendar and includes more than 40 sweep and sculling events.

Registration for the SHOP is open from now until Saturday, September 19, 2009.  Visit the Scullers’ Head of the Potomac online registration area on Ronin Racing to sign up.  Once there, you will also find a schedule of events, directions, a link to the waiver, athlete check-in information, and the most up to date list of competitors.

Please note, entries must be received by Saturday, September 12, 2009, to avoid the late fee.  And once registration closes on Saturday, September 19, 2009, it’s closed.  There is no race day registration this year.

Still have a question about the SHOP?  Please send it to PBC’s Regatta Committee chair, Samantha Byrd, at headofthepotomac@gmail.com.

Through one of the Nation’s most historic corridors, the Scullers’ Head of the Potomac is a true test of physical endurance and mental toughness for sweep crews and scullers alike.  Don’t miss it!

Reminder! Passcode change on Aug. 20!

August 19, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Neither "Pretty please?" nor "... But I really, really have to go!" will get you access anymore.

Planning to head down to the Club?  Before you do, you better check your email for the new locker room code.  The old code goes away on August 20.

Last week, the Security Committee sent the new code to active status senior members via email with the subject line, New PBC Security System and Measures: PLEASE READ!!!

Now, the committee is reaching out to all senior members. If you’re a senior member in good standing, who has yet to receive the new code, please send your name and a current email address to security@potomacboatclub.org, as soon as possible.

Competitive members, they haven’t forgotten about you!  Get with your coaches for the latest news on code changes and access to the Club.

The Security Committee plans to use the senior member email list to release more security information in the very near future, so make sure they have your latest email address, and stay alert for those messages!

Let’s GO, Margot!!!

Margot Shumway, Potomac Boat Club 2009

Let’s GO, Margot!!!

We know.  We said it, again.  It’s not clever, but we can’t help it.  Sometimes you blurt spontaneous, uncreative things when you’re excited, and we’ve been this way since USRowing announced the team for the 2009 World Rowing Championships earlier this week!

Why?  Well, because the roster of the athletes and coaches named to represent the United States includes Potomac Boat Club’s own Margot Shumway and coach Matt Madigan!

Margot and Matt were also on the team for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where Margot stroked the Women’s quad (W4x).  At world championships, Margot will represent the U.S. in the Women’s Single Sculls (W1x) event.

Lake Malta, site of the 2009 World Rowing Championships

Lake Malta, site of the 2009 World Rowing Championships

Joining Margot and Matt will be a few former PBC’ers, including Cam Kiosoglous (Coach, M4x), Sam Stitt (M4x), Sarah Trowbridge (W4x), and Brett Sickler (Alternate).  But if you want to go cheer them on, you better get your ticket soon and have your passport ready.

This year’s world championships will be held on Lake Malta in Poznań, Poland, from August 23 - 30.  Organized by the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron (FISA), the event is considered by most to be the highlight of the racing calendar in non-Olympic years.

For all the latest on Margot, check out mom Julia Shumway’s blog.  If you’d like to read the entire release from USRowing, we’ve included it below.

Now you’re jumping up and down, and what was that?! Let’s…?  GO…?  Margot?  See!  Feels good, doesn’t it?!

Best of luck to everyone as they fight to bring home the gold!
