First update to PBC Bylaws in 30 years

To: Members of Potomac Boat Club
From: Ed Ryan, Club Secretary

I am pleased to announce that the Board has updated the Bylaws of the Club for the first time since their last revision more than 30 years ago. The newly updated Bylaws can be found on the PBC website in the Members Area section and in the Members Only Info area of the Potomac Star (both areas are passcode protected).

The primary changes to the Bylaws were made to eliminate provisions that the Board determined were no longer relevant or applicable (availability of purchase option for life membership and waiver of initiation fee for active members of other rowing clubs); to update the fees and dues referenced in the Bylaws to …

Security reminder from the president

Hi All –

A recent locker room theft reminds us that despite significant improvements in house security, we must continue to take reasonable precautions to secure our belongings while at the club.

This particular theft was from an unlocked locker.  Please make sure you are locking your locker and closing doors behind you.  As an added measure, don’t be shy about questioning anyone you don’t recognize.

It’s unfortunate we have to be on guard at our own club, but if we remember to do these simple things, we will continue to increase the level of safety and security for all of us.

Bob Price
President, PBC

I love the water.

DSC02084

One of Dick's favorite places.

I love the water. By Dick Schwartzbard

Senior member Dick Schwartzbard has been retired from the federal government for more years than many of us have been alive.  He was a sailor, who loved the water, but got tired of driving all the way to the Chesapeake Bay from Arlington. He tried sailing on the Potomac, but quickly got tired of getting his boat stuck in the gunk.

When the weather is warmer, don’t be surprised to find Dick up on the porch at the club. It’s one of his favorite places to just sit, relax, and watch the river and the …

Vote by 9/15 to help kids learn to row!

Deadline to vote is Tuesday, September 15th.

Margot Zalkind, member of Potomac Boat Club and executive director of the Foundation for Rowing Education, needs our help!

Nike is investing up to $650,000 in grants across the nation to unlock the potential of young people through the power of sports.  Margot’s foundation has applied to receive one of these grants in order to help its youth outreach program, Row4All, continue to grow the sport of rowing among the underserved kids of western Massachusetts.  The application period is over, but now Nike is asking folks to determine the grant winners by voting.

This is where we come in.  Please visit Nike’s Back Your Block site …

2009 HOTO Results for Potomac

Fall racing season on the Occoquan

Hosted by Occoquan Boat Club (OBC), the Head of the Occoquan (HOTO) is one of the largest end of the season regattas in the country.  Collegiate, Club, Junior and Masters crews launch over two days from Sandy Run Regional Park (Fairfax, Va.) to race on a challenging 5000 meter (3.2 mile) course that runs through the Occoquan Reservoir.
This year’s HOTO was held on Halloween weekend (10/31 - 11/01), but you know darn well that didn’t scare us away. Quite a few of us showed up to support our neighbors to the south, OBC … and to cap off our …

Awesome finish for Margot!

Love this photo of Margot. Think she's happy with her finish? You bet!

WAY TO GO, MARGOT!

World Championships wraps up today in Poznan, and we imagine that our Margot Shumway and her coach Matt Madigan are leaving with more than a few great memories from Margot’s final on Friday, August 28.

Here is what USRowing had to say about the race:  “In the women’s single sculls, 2008 Olympian Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio) dominated her race to win by 3.77 seconds and finish in 13th place overall. The U.S. sculler took the lead early and widened the gap with Norway’s Tale Gjoertz in the final …
